Abdominoplasty : A procedure that will allow you to regain a flat stomach

Pregnancy, aging or weight fluctuations may cause a loosening of the abdominal muscles along with fat accumulation and a decrease of skin tone. Abdominoplasty makes it possible to correct the loosening of the muscles and to remove the excess skin and fat in order to give your abdomen a flat and aesthetic contour

Getting ready for abdominoplasty

There are several kinds of abdominoplasty. Depending on the results of a physical examination conducted by us, we will advise you about the surgical technique that best suits your needs. The extent of the abdominal scar varies from patient to patient. For those patients suffering from a loosening of the abdominal muscles (diastasis rectus abdominus) and minor excess skin, a mini abdominoplasty including muscle repair of the rectus abdominus and a small skin excision should be enough in most cases. When the excess and fat and skin is more serious, a complete abdominoplasty must be performed. This kind of surgery leaves a longer scar on the lower part of the abdomen as well as another one around the navel. If the excess fat is present on the lateral portion of the abdominals we may suggest performing a liposuction in addition to the abdominoplasty.

It is essential to stop smoking six weeks before and after the surgery. This measure reduces chances of delayed healing. Delayed healing is also more frequent in patients with diabetes or who are overweight.

 Abdominoplasty: surgery

This 2-3 hours surgery is usually performed as a day surgery, You will also be given the option of staying overnight at the surgical center. Small drainage pipes will be also placed on the lower part of the abdomen.

Recovery after abdominoplasty

This surgery can cause moderate pain that is easily treated with prescribed medication and rest. A follow up consultation is scheduled one week after the surgery in order to remove the dressing and the drainage pipes. From that moment, you can start taking showers. Following the surgery, you must wear the compression garment day and night for three weeks and another three weeks during the day. The rest of the postoperative consultations are generally scheduled three weeks, three months and one year after the surgery. Intense physical activity must be avoided for six weeks. If your work does not require any physical activity you will be able to return after a few weeks but is recommended to stop working for four to six weeks. The final result is normally achieved two to three months after the surgery but it is possible that the scars display some redness from six to twelve months. The results of abdominoplasty are long term, and if you maintain a healthy lifestyle you can benefit from flat abdomen for many years.

Possible complications

  • Infection: Can be prevented by strict hygiene before and after surgery. Rare infections are usually successfully treated with antibiotics.
  • Seroma: Liquid can sometimes accumulate after drain removal. This liquid can cause swelling or redness of the abdomen or pubis and may have to be evacuated by a puncture.
  • Bleeding: Rare, can sometimes require surgery to remove the blood that accumulates in the abdomen. This complication can sometimes be due to strenuous exercise short time after surgery
  • Healing problems: Some patients may develop hypertrophic scars or keloids following this surgery. These scars are treated with massage, silicone dressings or injections. The scars can also widen after surgery or present white or dark discoloration. These imperfections can be corrected if necessary 1 year after surgery.
  • Sensitivity: The skin on the abdomen may be insensitive for a period of about 3 months after surgery. You may also notice small areas of numbness around the scars. These symptoms usually disappear gradually but can be permanent in rare patients.
  • Delayed healing: Some patients may have an opening of the wound or skin necrosis. These situations occur primarily in patients with diabetes or smokers. These wounds are treated by dressing changes. They will eventually heal but will leave a larger scar.
  • Venous thrombosis: Rare. The frequency of this complication is significantly reduced by early ambulation
