Blepharoplasty: Find a younger and refreshed look without drastically changing the appearance of your face.

Over the years, the upper eyelids may grow heavy and convey a severe or tired look. The cutaneous excess may also create difficulties in applying makeup on the upper eyelid. Blepharoplasty eliminates this cutaneous and fatty surplus, aiming to achieve a younger and pleasant look without radically affecting the appearance of your face.

Getting ready for blepharoplasty

Certain conditions related to the thyroid, hypertension, diabetes and dry eye syndrome may increase the risk of complications. If necessary, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist before the surgery. Upper blepharoplasty does not impact the position of the eyebrows, nor does it eradicate crow’s feet or under the eye bags. We can provide advice as to which aesthetic surgeries may be used to treat these imperfections.

Blepharoplasty: surgery

This day surgery lasts approximately one hour. It is normally performed under local anesthetic or with sedation.

Blepharoplasty recovery

Blepharoplasty causes very slight pain that is easily treated with prescribed medication. At home, you must keep your head in a vertical position for the first few days. During the first 48 hours you will also have to apply cold compresses to the eyes for 10 to 15 minutes every two hours to reduce the edema and possible bruises. If necessary, you can apply eye drops to alleviate the irritation. The small dressings placed on the incisions will be removed along with the stitches during the first consultation, one week after the surgery. After the second week you will be able to apply foundation to cover the traces of the surgery. You must avoid aspirins, anti-inflammatories, and alcohol during the first two weeks. Physical activity during the first three weeks is not recommended. Most patients return to work from one week to ten days after the surgery. The rest of the postoperative consultations are generally scheduled three weeks to three months after the surgery. In most cases, the final result is achieved within two months after the surgery. The scar, which is pink in colour, becomes invisible by the third month. The results of the blepharoplasty are long term and you will maintain a new, younger look for many years.

Possible complications

Complications are not frequent with this surgery. In some cases the correction may seem insufficient. If I deemed necessary, a small correction can be performed. It is much easier to correct a skin excess than a skin deficit.

  • Asymmetry: a slight asymmetry of the lids may be present before and after surgery.
  • Oedema: swelling in some cases may be more important and cause an inability to fully close the eyelids during sleep. This is usually temporary but may be permanent in very rare cases.
  • Bleeding: very rare. If your eye swells suddenly or if you have sudden pain it is important to contact me.
